What to expect
During the test, a very small amount of a substance called a radioactive tracer is given to you. This may be administered as an injection, swallowed, or given in another way depending on the organ being examined. The tracer travels through your body and collects in certain organs or tissues.
A specialised camera then takes images that show how the tracer moves through your body. These images help doctors assess how well an organ is working, how blood is flowing, and how your body is processing certain substances, which can assist in diagnosing a range of medical conditions.
For your scan, you may be asked to change into a gown and remove jewellery, as some objects can interfere with the images. Preparation requirements and the length of the examination can vary depending on the type of scan.
Any specific preparation instructions will be provided when your appointment is booked. Information about possible side effects and what to expect after the procedure will also be explained during the consent process and after your examination.
